Three areas that trip up owner-operators

Most owner-ops are solid at the wheel. The paperwork is where things fall apart — and where DOT auditors look first.

IFTA

Quarterly fuel-tax filings are due four times a year

Miss a filing or under-report miles and you're looking at a 10% penalty plus interest, per quarter. The Q2 return is due July 31 — most owner-ops file on the last day or later.

DOT / FMCSA

Your USDOT number needs a biennial update — and most don't know it

Failure to complete the biennial update deactivates your number. An inactive USDOT on the road = out-of-service. It's one of the most common compliance gaps FMCSA finds.

Driver qualification

Incomplete DQ files are the #1 DOT audit finding for small carriers

Missing a current MVR, expired medical certificate, or an unsigned DQ form is enough to trigger violations. These don't self-renew — someone has to track them.

Straight answers

When is the Q2 IFTA return due?

July 31, 2026 in most base jurisdictions. IFTA returns are due 30 days after the end of each quarter (Q1=April 30, Q2=July 31, Q3=October 31, Q4=January 31). Late filing triggers a 10% penalty or $50 minimum — whichever is greater — plus interest on any tax owed.

Who needs an IFTA license?

Any motor carrier operating a qualified motor vehicle (3+ axles, or 2 axles + over 26,000 lb GVWR) in two or more IFTA member jurisdictions (48 US states + 10 Canadian provinces). If you cross any state line, you almost certainly need it.

What happens in a DOT roadside inspection if your compliance is out?

Roadside officers can place your vehicle or driver out-of-service on the spot. Violations go on your FMCSA CSA score and stay for 24 months, affecting your safety rating, insurance rates, and ability to get loads from brokers.

What does Truckly actually do?

Right now, Truckly is a free compliance check — 90 seconds, no signup required. We're building the tool behind it: IFTA mileage + fuel tracking, DOT renewal reminders, DQ file status, and PM schedules in one simple dashboard. Join the early list to shape what we build first.

Who's behind this?

Truckly is built by people who've watched owner-operators get hit with avoidable compliance fines because the paperwork side of trucking has no good tool. We're starting with the free check, talking to drivers, and building only what you tell us matters. Reply to the welcome email and you'll reach a human.
